There are two subtraction methods we can use to solve 2-digit subtraction sums in Grade 1.
Types of subtraction
We can perform 2-digit subtraction with the help of two methods which are as follows:
1. Regrouping method
Regrouping means grouping numbers into tens and ones. Therefore, the same is done by regrouping for subtraction.

For example, subtract 17 from 33.
We will regroup the 33 into tens and ones in the picture above. You can see that under the group of tens there are three blocks with ten mini blocks. There are only 3 mini blocks under them. These are mini blocks and every block is 1 mini block.
When we subtract, we subtract ones and tens from tens. In the image below, you can see that since there are 3 units and 7 subtractions, one block of tens will be brought into one column.
Subtraction by the rearrangement method
There are 13 mini-blocks in one column, and we have 7. The remaining number will be 6. Since one block from the tens has already been transferred to the column, the remaining blocks in the tens are 2 and we need to subtract 1. So the result will be 1.
Therefore, the answer is 16.
2. Without the method of regrouping
